Denying the Power of God

“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof. From such stay away.” – 2 Timothy 3:5 NKJV

That verse is usually used as a rebuke toward those who may not believe in, or operate in the charismatic gifts of the Spirit.  Or if they believe, they don’t allow them, or give much room for them in their church services.  Some think that this verse is telling us to stay away from such Christians.

The scripture has nothing at all to do with believing in miracles, healings, or speaking in tongues.

We often misappropriate scripture, because we imagine the writers are speaking as American evangelical conservatives with the same concerns that we have today.  When we remember that Paul’s biggest issue was a Jewish legalism with a fierce opposition to the good news of God’s grace, we easily see what he is talking about.

Here is a very clear way of saying it:

“They will act religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. Stay away from people like that!” – 2 Timothy 3:5 NLT

The good news of Jesus is all about a good, loving Father who shows, with the cross, how gracious He is toward us. Paul was very adamant about the power of the blood of Christ, and how it is a once and for all statement. He was accused (as Jesus was) of including sinners, and being soft on sin, but he also knew how weak and ineffective the law was, having worked it more than anyone he knew. (Some of you will relate to that.)

This was the fruit of his attempt at fulfilling the so called “requirements of God”:

“For to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.” – Romans 7:18 NKJV

Like so many people, Paul wanted to be godly, but couldn’t find the power to do it, no matter how he tried.  This is why, after being fully persuaded of God’s amazing grace, he would boldly make this statement in the face of all opposition and persecution…

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation…” – Romans 1:16 NKJV

The good news is the power!  It makes us fall in love, and love fulfills every bit of godliness.  The good news changes our hearts and minds.  The good news is powerful.  It’s all about him and not of us.  We are loved with an everlasting love, and NOTHING can separate us from that!

We hope your soul is at rest in the love and care of God.  Have a great day!
